Professor Liu Shuming defines corporate culture from seven aspects. The first aspect is, according to Ciyuan (Dictionary and Thesaurus), Wen Hua (culture) means Wen Zhi and Jiao Hua. “Wen” refers to accumulate gradually, so corporation culture can be reached in one move. The second is that corporation culture represents the character of a corporation, like the common faith, values and behavior. The third is corporation culture is a kind of thing that’s symbolic, integral, stable and hardly changeable. The fourth is that corporation culture, involved parts of tangible and intangible and compositive by learning of awareness and unawareness, not ideals, prospect and mission on the written papers, but daily practice, communication and faith. The fifth is, in brief, corporation culture is how to do things well at the corporation. The sixth is, corporation culture can be seen as a kind of circular and philosophic value, which can be shown in behavior. The seventh is, corporation culture can also be regarded as a system.
Which Phenomenon is Included in Corporation Culture Professor Liu thinks corporation culture phenomenon includes seven aspects: The first is custom, habit and public opinion. Custom, habit and public opinion in various places might become the culture phenomenon of the corporations of each place. The second is way of thinking. Professor Liu gave a story to explain the difference in the way of thinking between eastern and western people. An American and a Japanese encountered a lion at the same time. The Japanese tightened his shoestrings preparing to escape while the American sneering” can you run faster than the lion”? The Japanese answered:” I just need to run faster than you”. The third is criteria. When Americans do business, they put the profit at the first place, while the Japanese pay more attention to faith. The fourth is values, which mainly has profit values and service values. The fifth is mental realm. The sixth is style. Some corporations carry out strong management while some ones advocate humane. The seventh is people treatment art.
What Elements does Corporation Culture have? Professor Liu said that corporation culture contained five elements. The first is corporation culture. Various places produce various corporation cultures. Like a gnome says” Each place has its own way of supporting its own inhabitants”. The second is values, the core of the corporation culture. The third is heroic figures, which is the people who is the soul of a corporation. “Things of a kind come together”, leaders always have the employees with the same nature of themselves. The fourth is custom and ceremony. The fifth is culture network. The channel that the corporation chooses to use forms a network which is hard to be changed since its formation, unless the successor of the corporation forces to overthrow it.
Why it is Important to Learn Corporation Culture? Professor Liu believed learning corporation culture is at least for the following reasons. The first one is, as the executive staff, you must identify, learn and influence on corporation culture to ensure business agility and finance success. The second one is, as a potential employee, perceiving the culture of a corporation will be helpful to decide whether a corporation is the right one for you to contribute to and develop. The third one is you can make the corporation culture a basis to hire the people who would succeed in working at your corporation. The fourth one is, designing policies and tasks on the basis of corporation culture can increase the corporation’s capability to get profit and respond to the market demands. The fifth one is, corporation will react correctly when confronting real threat. How to Identify Corporation Culture? Professor Liu told us that we can identify corporation culture from ten aspects: 1. From the attitude of the working team, habits preference and work environment. 2. Considering tangible and intangible at the same time 3. From building, office, storefront, public image and public relation. 4. From the real structure of earnings. 5. From the construction and design. 6. From clothing. 7. From the procedure of organizing and corporation structure. 8. From ceremony, phenomenon and celebration style. 9. From commonly-used words and popular expression. 10. From mark, advocacy documents and slogan.
How will Corporation Culture Influence on its Development? At last, professor Liu summarized eight points on the relation between corporation culture and corporation development. The first is, promote corporation and improve management. Professor Liu said after Haier Group purchased Qingdao Xianxing Power Plant in 1995, it saved this “shock fish” by its corporation culture instead of capital investment. The second is, goal orientation, all round development. The third is, focus on coordination and culture promotion. The fourth is, people will cohesion. The fifth is, beautify environment and better life. The sixth is moralization, encourage, and talents creation. The seventh is moral restriction and system control. The eighth is public service and social radiation.
Fostering a kind of corporation culture is the same as shaping a person’s character, you should be patient. Professor Liu repeatedly emphasized the corporation is just like a person, so corporation’s fate is the person’s fate, which decided by his character, so changing corporation’s fate must start from changing its character, changing corporation’s character must start from changing its habits, changing corporation’s habits must start from changing its behavior, changing corporation’s behavior must start from changing its concept. These series of change was the procedure of building corporation culture. Therefore, all changes start from changing concept.
When an enterpriser asked how long it will take to build the culture of a corporation, professor Liu answered without hesitate:” Sorry, it could not be sure. The program of a kind of corporation culture may take just one or two minutes, but the construction of a corporation culture will take a long term. It can not be impatient.
