A
study published in Journal of Applied
Psychology
shows that even low-level
noises in the open-style office will lead to the increase of work
pressure, even harm one¡¯s health. According
to Gary Evans, professor of environmental
analysis in Cornell University even low-intensity noises such as
conversation, typing, telephone ring, will do negative impact to
human¡¯s physiological function. Evans is a leading
expert on environmental stress. Researchers
randomly assigned 40 female secretaries to
either a quiet office or one with low-intensity office noise for three
hours. The researchers found that the
workers in the noisy office experienced significantly higher levels of
stress (as measured by urinary epinephrine). If the adrenalin
level is too high, the chances for one to get heart diseases will
increase. It¡¯s
interesting that though the experimental result showed that the
experiment recipients had high adrenalin level, they didn¡¯t complain
about the noisiness in the open office. Professor Evans said: ¡°One
possible reason is that under stress, people focus on their main task or
activity. This focusing leads to less flexibility in considering
alternatives during decision making. Perhaps if people are working at a
task and are under more stress, they become more focused on the task
itself, not being as cognizant as they should be to change their posture
or take a break." Human
engineering experts say that noises affect one¡¯s posture of sitting
and can also make people ignorant of the badness of their working
environment. People who work in a noisy environment seldom adjust their
chairs and their posture of sitting. A human engineering expert suggests that if you couldn¡¯t change your working environment, you should get up from your seat and have a short time rest. It will not only release your work pressure, but also can improve your work efficiency. |

William
James, the American psychologist, found two attitudes towards time. One
is ¡°the work must be finished, but it¡¯s really annoying. I will put
it off until I have to do it¡±; while the other one is ¡°the work is
annoying, but must be finished. I should do it immediately so as to rid
myself of it as soon as possible.¡± When
you have a motive, quick action is very important. Do not think of
turning over all your bad habits at once and just force yourself to do
what you have postponed doing. Then starting from tomorrow morning, you
pick up what you are reluctant to do most. |
