fMRI Brain Scanner—a Lie Detector More Probing and Accurate than Polygraph

According the report of Financial Times, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can track the fluctuations of blood flow in the most active part of the brain and light up with different cognitive activities, consequently revealing the dynamic changes of thought mode.  The scientists from Carnegie Mellon University , Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology did an experiment on 26 volunteers, who had been instructed lying inside the fMRI scanner and each one was given 20 dollars to buy merchandises. The scanning result shows that when the subjects saw the merchandise they were interested in, the nucleus accumbens septi, one of the pleasure districts of the brain lit up.

 While when the price of the commodity is much too high, the insula which connects the distress area of the brain became active and prefrontal lobe cortex was also inhabited. By observing the active mode of different areas of the brain, the researcher was able to predict which commodity the participants would choose before they spoke out their final decision.

 The researchers of Temple University once simulated a shot scene with blank ammunition. 11 volunteers participated in experiment. fMRI scanner and polygraph (what a polygraph actually measures is the stress of telling a lie) were used respectively. 5 subjects were instructed to describe the event truthfully, and other six to deceive.

”when they told the truth, only 7 areas lit up, while when they were creating lies, 14 areas in the brain became active, which shows that when people try to deceive, there will be more activity on the deception scans, so the brain has to work harder to generate the fictitious narrative”.
